INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS

Human cognition and interaction with intelligent systems

What is happening to us?

We investigate the relationship between human cognition and artificial intelligence, analyzing how this interaction redefines our capacities for judgment, learning, and agency in an expansive technological environment.

WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO UNDERSTAND

We seek to understand what kind of systems are emerging from the development of artificial intelligence and how they are changing their capabilities for perception, reasoning, learning, coordination, and action. We are especially interested in the transition from tools that respond to instructions toward systems capable of operating with increasing degrees of autonomy, interacting with other systems, and producing effects in digital and physical environments.

Agents and autonomy

Research on systems capable of pursuing objectives, executing tasks, and coordinating actions with increasing degrees of autonomy.

Reasoning and emergent capabilities

Study of new capabilities for inference, planning, learning, and problem-solving in artificial intelligence systems.

Multi-agent systems and coordination

Exploration of architectures in which multiple human and artificial agents interact, cooperate, and make decisions.

Artificial intelligence in the physical world

Analysis of the expansion of intelligent systems into robotics, infrastructure, science, industry, and other environments of action.

When artificial intelligence begins to act

RELATED PROGRAMS

Some Cosmópolis Lab programs arise from the research developed in this Think Lab. These spaces explore the evolution of intelligent systems, their new capabilities, and the transformations they produce by progressively integrating into human, institutional, and social processes.

OPEN QUESTIONS

What changes when a system stops only responding to instructions and begins to pursue objectives?

What forms of coordination emerge when human and artificial agents act within the same system?

What happens when algorithmic intelligence acquires the capacity to act physically in the world?
